Crafting Ecologies is a 10-day experiential journey through the trans-Himalayan landscape of Ladakh, tracing a path from the sun-warmed agricultural oases of the western Sham Valley to the vast, windswept pastures of the eastern Changthang Plateau. Viewing traditional crafts and ecology as a living library, we explore how landscape-driven design and indigenous knowledge have sustained this culture across millennia.
We live alongside multi-generational master potters and walk in step with nomadic Changpa pastoralists. Together, our hands find the earth: digging raw mountain clay to shape vessels, spinning wool on traditional drop spindles, and learning to operate portable backstrap looms.
Beyond the craft itself, we decode the region's unique geology, look up at pristine night skies through a telescope, and share in the oral histories of the land — closing our days with regional films, stories, songs, and dances with
the local Amaleys (mothers).

We begin with a full day of quiet rest in Leh, letting the body align with the thin mountain air while anchoring ourselves in the tour's zero-plastic guidelines, water conservation, and eco-etiquette.
In Likir, we walk the mountainsides to source raw clay, shaping it alongside master artisans to connect ancestral pottery back to its frozen, glacial origins. Moving through Saspol and Basgo, we decode the rhythm of ancient fortresses and traditional building systems. Finally, in Alchi, we witness a rare architectural dialogue between Kashmir and Ladakh — 11th-century mud and straw walls breathing as natural thermal batteries, catching solar warmth to preserve ancient sacred art.

DAYS 1–4
SHAM VALLEY

SETTLEMENTS SHAPED BY STONE, CLAY AND SEASONAL RHYTHMS
We ascend into the vast rangelands of the Changthang Plateau to witness extreme adaptation and nomadic resilience — walking side-by-side with Changpa shepherds and the animals that have shaped these high-altitude pastures for centuries. Here we discover how the Changthangi goat weaves its own ultra-fine shelter: an invisible shield of Pashmina grown to survive fierce −40°C winds.
The Amaleys teach us to spin raw sheep's wool and weave on portable backstrap looms — carried with them while grazing their goats — techniques used to create intricate Ladakhi carpets and snam-bu, the traditional woolen cloth. We also observe the Rebo, the yak-hair tent: a living fabric that expands to seal out rain and contracts to breathe in the heat.

We trace our way back to Leh via the vast, shifting shores of Pangong Lake, taking deliberate time to breathe and process the depth of what we've experienced. In the capital, we slow our pace for an intimate heritage walk through the weathered alleys of Leh Old Town, looking closely at climate-resilient mud architecture that has quietly outlasted centuries, then immerse ourselves in ethical slow fashion at the Lena Ladakh Pashmina or Looms of Ladakh flagship studios.
On our final morning we gather for a shared circle of reflection — examining our consumer footprint and the enduring value of slow craft — before carrying a piece of this landscape with us on our onward journeys.
